What you are actually hiring
A 1.8 tonne rubber-tracked excavator with retractable tracks, a tipper that goes with it on every job, and one operator who quotes, drives and finishes the work. There is no dispatcher between you and the machine, and nobody subcontracts your job to someone you have never spoken to.
The practical effect is that the person who told you what it would cost is standing in your backyard when a surprise turns up, and can make a call about it on the spot instead of ringing an office.
Where the small machine wins
Tight suburban access, established gardens, work close to a house or a fence, and jobs where the site has to be left tidy rather than just cleared. A 5 tonne machine is faster in an open paddock and useless down the side of a Roxburgh Park townhouse.
